What is a Snug-Up and How Do You Do It?

Learn what a DenSureFit Snug-Up application is, the purpose for it, and how it is done.

Have you done an application of DenSureFit and your denture is not quite snug enough? Then you'll need to do a Snug-Up application.

WHAT IS A SNUG-UP?

A Snug-Up is when additional silicone is added to the previous layer to the TROUGH/GUM LINE area of the denture to make it fit tighter. The Snug-Up application may be done immediately after applying the first layer OR it may be done later on as the denture loosens.

DenSureFit is a soft silicone reline to improve the fit and comfort of a denture. The customized liner can stay in the denture for months. When the denture becomes loose again (result of shrinking gums), additional layers of silicone may be added to the trough/gum line area of an upper or a lower denture in order to snug it up again.

The denture becomes loose because of shrinking gums. This shrinking of the gums makes a new void in the trough of the denture. DenSureFit silicone fills this void in the trough and makes the denture snug again.

Everyone's denture situation is different, so different people require different amounts of silicone to fill the void. Some people may only need 1/2 of an applicator (approximately one line around the middle of the wall) of silicone to get snug. Some need the whole applicator.

One kit of DenSureFit contains 2 applicators of silicone and is intended to reline ONE denture plate. The reason for this is that most people with medium looseness require 2 applicators of silicone on their upper to make it snug. Of course, this can vary from person to person.

Upper Snug-Up Quick Guide

THE FOUNDATION LAYER (1st applicator of silicone)

The first applicator of silicone lays the FOUNDATION for your liner. If this foundation layer is not a good one (examples at end of this article), the result will be a POOR fit and it will need to be re-done from scratch. If you have encountered a poor foundation, contact DenSureFit and we will HAPPILY help you out!

The foundation layer usually covers MOST of the inside surface of the denture. The palate of the upper denture should end up having a THIN, EVEN layer of silicone. If the silicone of the foundation layer was not enough to fill all the voids in the trough, then a Snug-Up application is needed. Once of the signs that more silicone is needed to fill the voids is if the silicone did not climb to the top of the wall and if it did not "flash" on top of the ridge. The lack of these 2 things means that the voids are not yet filled. This is not an issue (unless you stop right there and don't fill the voids) because you finish filling those voids with the Snug-Up application.

OOPS...not enough silicone to fill voids

SNUG-UP APPLICATION (additional silicone needed to fill voids in trough)

When the Snug-Up application is applied, the silicone should ONLY be applied to the gum line area, or trough. It is applied around the MIDDLE OF THE WALL, specifically. The reason for applying it around the middle of the wall is to keep the silicone far away from the palate. NEVER APPLY ANY MORE SILICONE TO THE PALATE of the upper denture! IF you do, it will ruin your fit and you will need to start over again from scratch. ONLY apply more silicone to the trough of an upper! Why? Keep reading!

WHY is SILICONE APPLIED ONLY IN THE TROUGH on a Snug-Up?

We only apply silicone to the trough of the denture on the Snug-Up to prevent more silicone from building up on the palate. The palate layer needs to be kept as thin as possible.

You ONLY need more silicone in the trough area because that is where the voids are that you need to finish filling!

If you over-apply the silicone on the palate (or if there is a bumpy/lumpy silicone foundation that is not a perfect impression of the roof of your mouth), the layer of silicone will be too thick. It will cause your denture to drop down lower in your mouth and can create new voids in the trough.

A THIN, EVEN layer of silicone on the palate that is a perfect impression of the roof of your mouth is necessary.

Your upper denture needs to be snuggled in your suction spot as high and close as you can keep it to the roof of your mouth. This suction spot is where you get suction from (not everyone has the natural contours to achieve suction). If there are any gaps or air pockets between the roof of your mouth and the palate of your denture, suction cannot be achieved and your fit will be poor. The denture will likely NOT stay up in the roof of your mouth without adhesive.

This is also the reason why DenSureFit silicone is ONLY applied to the trough if applying over a soft reline from your dentist as well.

DO YOU NEED PRIMER FOR A SNUG-UP APPLICATION?

You ONLY need to re-apply primer to the bare spots of acrylic on a Snug-Up application. You should NOT apply primer on top of the silicone. The silicone will adhere to itself as long as it is perfectly clean and dry. You will waste the primer if you apply it over silicone and may risk improper adhesion of the next layer of silicone.

HOW ABOUT IF I'M APPLYING DenSureFit OVER A SOFT RELINE FROM MY DENTIST?

If you are applying DenSureFit over a soft professional reline, the silicone ONLY gets applied in the trough area of the denture. DO NOT put DenSureFit silicone on the palate over a soft professional reline. It will over-build the palate and you may loose your good fit.

IS PRIMER NEEDED OVER A SOFT PROFESSIONAL RELINE?

Yes. This is an exception. Since your dentist's reline material may not be the same as the DenSureFit material, in order to ensure that our material will stick to theirs, you'll need to apply our primer everywhere inside EXCEPT for the middle to top part of the palate. You don't need primer there because you are not putting DenSureFit silicone there. You are keeping the silicone AWAY from the palate.
